Howdy!!<\/p>\r\n

My name is Chip and I am a General Class amateur radio operator.<\/p>\r\n

I became interested in Amateur Radio in 1980, but couldn’t master the 5wpm morse code requirement needed for a Novice class license until 1984 when the Pennsylvania Air National Guard sent me to specialized training just for morse code (kind of a do or die situation). I became KA3NDC and held my Novice license for only a short time before I moved up to Technician, and became N3FUD. When the FCC did away with the code requirement, I moved up to the Tech+ level. I mainly inhabited the 2m and 70cm bands but lost interested in the late 1990s due to several family and health issues.<\/p>\r\n

I became the proud owner of my first HF rig after visiting my father, KC3KN, in 2012 and admiring his newest acquisition, a Yaesu FT-847. It was only a matter of time, and I broke down and bought a Yaesu FT-897, a base\/mobile\/portable HF\/6m\/2m\/70cm rig. A few days later, I built my first antenna, a 10m velocity factor dipole, which\u00a0 I use occasionally. A few pieces of donated equipment later (thanks, Dad\u00a0 (KC3KN-SK)), I was on the air below 2m.<\/p>\r\n

I obtained my General License on May 11, 2006, at the York Ham Foundation test.<\/p>\r\n

I mostly work in digital modes, specifically packet, VARA FM, RMS Express, and NBEMS. Still working with the Yaesu FT-897, a Palstar AT2K, a Signalink USB, and a computer still running Windows XP. The antenna is a GR5V Jr dipole about 30 feet off the ground.<\/p>\r\n

I ventured into DMR with a GD-77 and set up my own DMR (pi-star MMDVM) hotspot in 2017. The hotspot was very easy to set up and was running at 100mw off of an antenna up 15 feet. Since then I added six more hotspots, two of which are GD-77 running Open GD77 as high power simplex hotspots. The original hotspot (a simplex node) has become my experimental hotspot. There are two duplex hotspots, one at home and on in my car. The two duplex hotspots are connected to the Brandmeister network on TS2 and the TGIF network on TS1.\u00a0 The two OpenGD77 high power hot spots, and two simplex hotspots are connected to the Brandmeister network.<\/p>\r\n

My working DMR handheld is an Anytone 878UV+, and my vehicle radio is an Anytone 587UV-Pro.<\/p>\r\n

I have several projects running, including a\u00a0digital project is AX25 over IP and RF links. I have set up a linBPQ node (NCPA:N3FUD-7) with BBS\u00a0on 145.01 and 145.03 MHz 1200 baud packet.\u00a0 I have a WinLink RMS server (N3FUD-10) on both ports.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Another project is working with the AREDN (amateur radio mesh network). My hope is to establish AREDN nodes in southcentral Pennsylvania and continue its expansion into the rest of Pennsylvania with the help of the folks in the southeastern part of the Commonwealth who have successfully deployed an AREDN network in their area, and the Central Pennsylvania Repeater Association who have deployed a point to point microwave network to link all of their sites by RF. Through the established network, I am linking the BPQ node to other nodes, providing other services usable to hams deployed through ARES, RACES, and the Pennsylvania Auxillary Communications Service. Digital RF communications are growing again!<\/p>\r\n

I am also working on updating my go-kits. My father started an HF\/VHF\/UHF voice and digital kit, to which I am adding a BPQ node and an AllStarLink node. A second kit will include AREDN and microwave equipment to provide VoIP and data services at a field location.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n
